Assistance that protects independence

Assisted living is for people who may benefit from help with everyday tasks while continuing to take part in a residential routine. Mountbatten House is a Type A assisted-living home with a capacity of 24 residents. Services, staffing, and level of care must be confirmed with the operator.

What assisted living is meant to do

Support can involve personal care, mobility, meals, medication routines, housekeeping, reminders, social connection, and safety oversight appropriate to the setting. The goal is not to do everything for a resident—it is to provide the right assistance so a resident can participate in the parts of life that remain important to them.

A family should describe the person’s needs honestly, including falls, transfers, continence, behavior changes, memory concerns, medication complexity, nighttime needs, and any recent hospital or rehabilitation stay.

How support may fit into the day

Activities of daily living

Bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, transferring, and moving through the home. Ask how ADLs are evaluated and how changes are communicated.

Personal care with respect

Intimate help should be approached with privacy, patience, and respect. Ask how preferences are learned and documented.

Supported independence

Independence can mean having choices, time, privacy, and a role in one’s own routine—even when another person helps with a transfer or shower.

Medication assistance

Support may involve reminders, assistance with self-administration, storage, coordination, or management by authorized personnel. Confirm process, qualifications, and charges.

Mobility & transfers

Ask what mobility assistance can be safely provided, what equipment is permitted, and whether an assessment is needed before move-in.

Meals & housekeeping

Ask about meal schedules, dietary needs, snacks, hydration, laundry, and what is included versus billed separately.

24-hour support, explained carefully

The phrase “24-hour support” can describe the availability of resident support or oversight across the day and night, within the capabilities of a Type A assisted-living home. It should not be expanded into a promise of 24-hour skilled nursing, emergency medical care, or a nurse continuously on site.

Ask what overnight support means in practice: Is there a person to contact? How are nighttime bathroom needs or changes in condition handled? What is the emergency procedure?

Respite and short-term questions

Some families explore respite because a caregiver needs a break or a resident is transitioning after a hospital stay. Respite availability, length of stay, assessment, pricing, and room options vary. Mountbatten House should confirm whether respite is currently offered before any page says that it is available.

Educational

Memory Care Highlands: honest limits

Families searching for Memory Care Highlands may be responding to forgetfulness, a diagnosis, or safety concerns. Dedicated memory care is designed around the needs of people with cognitive impairment and may include specialized programming, environmental design, staffing models, secured areas, and dementia-specific practices.

Mountbatten House is an assisted-living home, not a dedicated memory care community. Mild memory loss alone does not answer the placement question. A specialized setting may become more appropriate when a person needs continuous dementia-specific supervision, a secured environment, frequent redirection, or care beyond the scope of a Type A home.

This is education—not a diagnosis or placement rule. Speak with the person’s physician and discuss the situation honestly with the prospective community.
